Goin’ Postal: Beefcakes

Beefcakes’ debut album, Goin’ Postal, is nine tracks of musical absurdism, in the best way. It’s got all the instrumental prowess of Primus and all the irony of Viagra Boys mixed into one post-punk, thought-provoking, experimental playthrough. The songs are all completely unique, with the album spanning several punk subgenres between tracks, yet totally cohesive, brought together by insanely impressive drum beats, bass rhythms, and witty lyrics that poke fun at contemporary society. Tracks like “Goblin King” and “Pickleball Champion” feature dark bass tones and abrasive vocals, while “Too Many Nazis” and “Leg Room” adopt classic punk sounds with quick electric guitars and jazzy-punk drum rhythms. Standouts off this record include “Muscle Car,” for its catchy melody and tongue-in-cheek lyrics, and “Burger Police” (a personal favourite) for its sludgey bass tones and droning guitar fuzz that toes the line of noise rock. This album should be the new standard for local rock, and I find myself looking forward to their next release.
