Let’s set the scene: the last of the autumn leaves are falling off the trees, and you’re looking at old photo albums you found hidden away and reminiscing on days gone by. That sense of sweet nostalgia—the kind that lingers in your chest—is the essence of the Cartwrights’ new album If I Didn’t Live Here I’d Leave. With folky-country acoustics, rich storytelling, and sometimes even classic rock instrumentals, this local album is comforting, rewarding, and warm. “Frozen Windows” is my favourite track; it completely tugs on the heartstrings. The song has a mild fingerpicking, Bob Dylan-style guitar riff, gentle harmonica, and airy vocals. “Onto You” is another delightful track. It diverts from the country elements of the other tunes and features a driving, crunchy guitar riff throughout and a sweet solo to punctuate the song. The drumming on this track also employs a lot of cymbals—a surprising treat. Overall, the songs are wonderfully pleasant, emotive, and something to turn on when you find yourself feeling a little sentimental.
