Wiggins Productions presents Hawking, Saturday, June 6 at The Foundry. Formerly Tommy Alto, Vancouver indie rock/math-pop Hawking will be making a stop on their 42-date North American tour to play Thunder Bay. Opening the night will be Ryan MacDonald, vocalist and lead guitarist of TBay’s The Honest Heart Collective.
Hawking is made up of Ben Klassen (vocals/guitar), Tom Vanderkam (vocals/guitar), Chris Young (vocals/bass) and Chartwell Kerr (vocals/drums). They formed in the fall of 2012 with the goal of creating honest, innovative and forward-thinking music. They strive to keep their songs as enigmatic as they are catchy, combining powerful and evocative vocals with angular guitar riffs, held together by a liberatingly adventurous rhythm section.
The group’s new self-titled EP is set for release on July 14th 2015, and is already being met with acclamatory reviews across North America, described as “an intricate tapestry of thought-provoking lyricism with complex drums and guitar” by Shakefire, and “interesting guitar based music… reminds me of early Foals,” by the UK’s Early Doors Journal.
Alongside lively, infectious and highly-textured singles like “Safe and Sound” and “Cold Hands,” the record also features more equivocal and intricate compositions like “Books on Tape” and “Diastole.” The boys are known for being one of Vancouver’s hardest-touring independent bands, playing upwards of 60 shows annually and regularly sharing stages with mid-level heavy hitters like Foxing, Gates and Chastity.
An outfit of Canadian music mavericks who continue to take the scene by storm, Hawking is driven to make passionate, real, and memorable music for many years to come.
Doors at 10 pm, show at 11 pm. Cover is $5. Age of majority required.
