Fresh off the release of their well received debut album, Northern Lies, Toronto folk n’ roll rockers, Sun K, are back on the road for their Western Skies Tour which includes a stop in Thunder Bay on July 11.

Sun K’s line-up features a sonically dynamic group of guys, including front man Kristian Montano, keyboardist Stuart Retallack who also plays horns, guitarist and fiddler Kevin Michael Butler, bassist JuHang Sin and a new addition to the group is drummer Scott Tiller. According to Exclaim, “The band bring together a gritty blend of rock, blues and folk, led by vocalist Kristian Montano. Going for a vocal delivery in the vein of Julian Casablancas and Lou Reed, he pairs his singing chops with a guitar sound ‘honed directly through the Neil Young songbook.’”

Produced by Cone McCaslin, whose credits also include The Strumbellas and Operation MD, and mixed by Gus Van Go and Werner F, the eight songs that made up Northern Lies are a mix of retro rock with a new age flair. Their harmonies conjure up musical memories of CSNY, but, trust us, they are not a mere throwback to the 70s.

Sun K’s show in Thunder Bay lands on The Foundry’s third anniversary celebration which will also feature local band The Goods playing B.B. King tunes.
