Winter Light

Caress the Light, digital illustration, boy Roland

By Michael Sobota

In the available light

coming through two windows large and curtained

on the wall behind the bed

I see from across the room just the top of your head

above the blankets rumpled and pulled up around you.

And then later when you move

part of a hand comes out and finds

the available light.

If you could sit here where I am

across the room and see

in this light what I see

you would know why I love you

and you would understand that that love

has little to do with your body, little to do with your mind

both lying there asleep

and all to do with the available light.

Michael Sobota

To call Michael Sobota a film buff would be an understatement. Originally from Wisconsin (he was born in his grandparents’ house during a blizzard), he moved to Thunder Bay in 1969. Since then, the writer and playwright has been deeply involved in the community, whether through arts or activism. In 2019, he was bestowed the title of Grand Marshall of the Pride Parade. In 2025, he was the recipient of the NOWW Margaret Phillips award for his dedication to advancing literary arts in the region.
