“It's a legacy, and it's just part of our family. It's who we are,” says Graysen Thompson, the third generation of family members operating George’s Market, as the neighbourhood grocer marks a milestone 65 years in business.
Family and friends, market-goers, and members of the media gathered today at a community event held in the parking lot of George’s Market to celebrate the anniversary with popcorn, 65 cent hot dogs, and a sweet surprise. As a part of their 65th anniversary, the Thompson family unveiled the latest expansion of the market, Snacks & Scoops, a food trailer that will bring ice cream, milkshakes, and sundaes to their parking lot this summer.
“Of course, we are trying to make an ode to our original roots, being born in 1961,” Graysen says of their intent with Snacks & Scoops, explaining that their hope with the food trailer is to create a place for families to gather and make summer memories. “It will be stationary for the year, just because it's new to us. And then after that, we're hoping to pop up at a couple of local festivals.”
Speaking at the celebration, Graysen’s father and co-owner of George’s Market, Danny Thompson says the business has taken on a role larger than that of just a grocery store, and that he and his family are proud of the culture they’ve cultivated. “We know all the customers. We know a lot of them by their first names. We know their families, we're serving their grandchildren, right? It's more of a community,” Danny says. “We're so proud. My mom's still alive—my father's passed—but this is the vision they would have seen for George's Market.”
Snacks & Scoops is now open seven days a week from 12 to 8:30 pm in the parking lot of George’s Market.
