Ambitious, Exciting, and Innovative
TBSO Returns For Their 66th Season
By Brianna Vilcek
Ambitious, exciting, and innovative—those are three words Brittany Moat, executive director of the TBSO, uses to describe the upcoming 66th season of the orchestra. This year’s tagline, “The music you’ve been waiting for,” reflects the orchestra’s effort to listen to what audiences want, from bringing back popular concert series to introducing new experiences.
“I think we’ve built a season that’s really compelling,” says Moat. “I think we’ve done a really good job of balancing the realities of programming in the north with what audiences have been asking for.”
This year, the orchestra is prepared to bring music and entertainment to audiences of all ages. “Sometimes there’s a misconception, like the symphony can feel really intimidating, or that you know it’s only for certain people, and I really want to challenge that idea,” says Moat. She also highlights the orchestra as an opportunity to disconnect from the online world and experience a real-life moment. “You come to a concert, your phone is off, you get to enjoy the music, and it turns off all the noise,” she says.
Audiences can look forward to hearing the orchestra perform the music of Fleetwood Mac this year as part of the Jeans ’n Classics pop series. “I think that’s a really cool one because I feel like Fleetwood Mac has sort of made a resurgence in the last couple of years, where they’ve gotten popular with the next generation,” says Moat. The TBSO will also bring the music of Star Wars to the stage in November. “If you are a Star Wars fan, I would not miss that one. It’s going to be a full stage of musicians; we’re bringing in a lot of extra folks for that one to get that big sound,” she says. “I think that’s going to be really cool as well.”
The TBSO is also bringing back two concert series this year. “Northern Lights is much more casual as far as a symphony concert goes, and so we’re bringing that back,” Moat says. Audiences interested in a smaller, more intimate concert can check out Classical Plus, also returning this year. “It’s really cool as well because the soloists in those concerts are actually musicians within the orchestra,” says Moat. “So we are featuring our own folks in that, and that’s something we used to do. It was a series that existed before COVID, and so we’re excited to bring it back.”
Tickets for the season can be purchased online at tbso.ca or by phone at (807) 626-TBSO (8276).
