If you’re familiar with the Thunder Bay tattoo scene, then you’ve likely heard of Vanessa Presenger. Many folks have been graced by her artistry throughout the years (myself included), and we are proud to announce her as 2025’s Best Tattoo Artist.

With over 20 years of experience under her belt, Presenger started her tattoo journey in Calgary before moving to Thunder Bay and apprenticing under another local tattoo legend, Chad Gilbert. Her style, which has evolved throughout the years, ranges from dainty floral work to large ornamental pieces to sentimental pet portraits.

“I get inspired by all the things I love. I love pretty, feminine things. If you look at my tattoos, I clearly love dogs. I will never ever get sick of tattooing portraits of dogs,” Presenger laughs. Her pet portraits have helped countless customers memorialize their furry friends as beautiful body art. As for what keeps her enthusiastic about her artistry after two decades? Pure enjoyment. “I don’t think anything specifically keeps me passionate; I just simply love what I do. If I ever stop loving it, I’ll stop doing it. I feel very lucky I get to do this everyday.” 

After working for various local tattoo shops, including Creation Body Piercing, Presenger went on to own a few herself (throwback to Red River Trade Co. and Studio 449); today, she works out of her home studio.
