Monsoon Season is the debut LP from Toronto’s Biblical. Biblical are more atmospheric than most of their stoner rock brethren. Though they have catchy hooks, their heavy, lazy riffs have more edge than, say, Monster Truck. I really like their softer sections. Their singer, Nick Sewell, seems to do his best work when he’s hanging out among the tremolo guitar and organ swells rather than surfing on the beefy power chords. The wet guitar tones on this album definitely conjure up images of monsoon rains and match perfectly with Thunder Bay’s wet early spring this year, especially on “All Justice No Peace.”

Andy Beaver’s intimate connection to the land and scenery around him began in his home community of Nibinamik First Nation. In describing his favourite photo, he says, “There was a forest fire a few years back. It was dark outside, and I had my camera. You could hear the flames raging in the night and the northern lights were visible overhead. Just this huge green band over the fire. It only lasted a few seconds, and I snapped the shot.”
