Starting July 10, compost is available to City residents at no charge at the Solid Waste & Recycling Facility, while quantities last. The pick-up area is located just east of the old landfill entrance on John Street Road.  Hours of operation at the compost pick-up area are Monday to Friday, from 8:30 am to 5 pm, and Saturday, from 9 am to 4 pm. Residents can drive in and take home free compost ideal for landscaping, flower beds and lawns. This compost is not for use in vegetable gardens. Quantities limited to a maximum of one half ton load per resident.

Residents bringing garbage, recycling and/or hazardous household waste must dispose of these items at the Solid Waste & Recycling Facility on Mapleward Road before visiting the special compost pick-up area. Remember to sort and secure your load and always use the appropriate laydown areas.  The compost pick-up area is accessible from John Street Road only. “All the leaves and organic garden waste dropped off at the compost laydown area at the landfill have been blended with organic waste collected during the special spring and fall curbside pick-ups,” said Jason Sherband, Coordinator Solid Waste Diversion and Recycling – Roads Division.  The result is high quality, well-aged and screened compost available to city residents at no charge.”

Residents are advised to bring a shovel and some bags or containers to carry their compost home.
