This month begins a year of events that will celebrate Lakehead University’s 50th anniversary.

Celebrations held at both the Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses will begin during the week of January 12 with invitations extended to everyone in the two communities.

“Over the past 50 years, Lakehead University has built a reputation for being both exceptional and unconventional,” said Dr. Brian Stevenson, Lakehead President and Vice-Chancellor. “I invite everyone to join us at our anniversary events to celebrate everything we have accomplished together.”

To commemorate the anniversary, the City of Thunder Bay will raise Lakehead’s 50th Anniversary flag at City Hall on Monday, January 12 at 10 am.

On Friday, January 16, community members are invited to join Dr. Stevenson to launch the 50th Anniversary Celebrations with an afternoon of skating on Lake Tamblyn, a free BBQ, bonfire and fireworks from 2:30 pm until 7 pm, in conjunction with LUSU’s Winter Carnival. This event includes free parking.

The first 100 guests at the Friday, January 16 launch will receive free tickets to watch the Lakehead Thunderwolves Men’s Hockey Team play the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières Patriotes at 7:30 pm that night. Bus transportation to and from campus will be available.

Lakehead University was established in 1965, in what is now the city of Thunder Bay, and its Orillia campus opened in 2006. To register for events or learn more about Lakehead’s 50th Anniversary, visit 50.lakeheadu.ca.
