Interstellar Outdoor Cinema, sponsored by Tbaytel and The Municipality of Neebing, are excited to announce the official launch of the cinema on July 3. Movies will be projected on the big screen at Cloud 61 located at the intersection of historic Highway 61 and Cloud Lake Road.

Director of operations, Darren McChristie says, “We have been working hard to find a location that meets the requirements set out by the movie industry regarding distance from the nearest commercial theatre. Cloud 61 not only meets the distance required (40-45 km), it is a scenic drive and the site is oriented with a slight slope in the ideal direction.”

Movies will begin at dusk every Thursday to Sunday. Tickets will be sold online in advance.

“We are all about the experience. The site is scenic and we want the whole experience to be enjoyable. That’s why we are limiting the number of cars to 75 until we are running smoothly.” “We are in this for the long term,” says McChristie.

In addition to a mix of new and classic movies that will be screened regularly throughout the summer, Interstellar Outdoor Cinema has been in talks with a number of other user groups who have reached out to screen film festivals and concerts. “We will be bringing the outdoor cinema experience to several locations throughout the summer and into the fall.”

Opening night will feature Sleeping Giant which was filmed in Thunder Bay and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earning nominations for the Critics Week Grand Prize and Golden Camera Award. It also took home the Best Canadian First Feature Film Award at TIFF 2015. Local actor Nick Serino was awarded the 2016 Canadian Screen Award for Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role.

“We plan on showing close to 50 movies this year and wanted to start with a film that has a local connection. Sleeping Giant is a great film with familiar scenery shot very close to where the film will be projected,” explains McChristie.

Other confirmed films include Ford v Ferrari (2019), starring Academy Award-winners Matt Damon and Christian Bale in a gripping, true story that is nominated for Best Picture for Oscars 2020 and There’s Something About Mary (1998) a Farrelly Brothers romantic comedy starring a young Ben Stiller, Cameron Diaz and Matt Damon.
