On October 10, an enthusiastic group met at Waverley Park  to show their support to reduce the level of CO2 to 350 parts per million –  the level scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. People met at 7,347 events in 188 countries. Locally, the event was organized by Elysia Petrone, the Lakehead University Student Union’s Sustainability Commissioner, with help from others. Speakers included Graham Saunders and Adam Cornwell who discussed Lake Superior and the science of climate change, Jay Stapleton, a candidate in the upcoming municipal election and Bruce Hyer, the federal MP for Thunder Bay-Superior North who discussed his bill The Climate Change Accountability Act, now under review by the Senate. Pumpkin art was used to visually represent 350 – participants departed with a personal pumpkin and, hopefully, a stronger effort to their contributions to CO2 . www.350.org
