The (Post) Mistress

World Premiere of Tomson Highway’s New Musical

Playwright and Order of Canada inductee Tomson Highway brings us his latest musical about a postal worker (“mistress”) who can divine the contents of the letters she delivers, giving her a better understanding of the people she serves, which she shares with the audience in song. “With the advent of e-mail and all the other computer technology that has literally taken over the world, no one writes love letters anymore. And no one ever gets them,” explains Tomson. “The love letter, that is to say, has become a lost form of human communication.” Each of the 12 songs in the show is in effect a love letter that passes through the hands of the post “mistress.” “Throughout the course of my increasingly long life I have known several post mistresses at several post offices,” says Tomson. “And I have fallen in love with almost every one of them. I find most of them (i.e. these post mistresses) to be, and to have been, colourful, exciting, lovely, and loving characters, who are also an awful lot of fun to be with, to spend time with, even if it’s only for two five-minute periods a week. To me, they are messengers, a kind of angel who relays messages from one side of her counter to the other.”
