Join us for this opportunity to learn some Ojibwe language and enjoy a creative activity.
Two evenings, March 23 and 30th from 6 – 8 pm with Elder and teacher, Esther Diabo.
Ojibwe language lesson: speaking activities and art card making using block print technique. Cost: $35 +hst Members $45 +hst.
We will begin with a short teaching on the word “Dibendaagoziwin” and a “mini lesson” in Ojibwe using the theme of family relations. Participants will have a chance to use family terms in Ojibwe and see them written in the language. There will be speaking and then each session will conclude with card making using block printmaking technique to combine text and imagery.
BIO Esther Diabo:
Esther Diabo graduated from Lakehead University in 2000 with BA and a BEd in the Primary Junior divisions. She has also earned a teaching certificate in 2004 from the Native Language Teacher’s Program. Esther has taught in many northern communities to further her understanding of other First Nation languages and cultures. Most recently she has been teaching with a local school board and at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Esther has proven popular in the teaching setting.
In her spare time, Esther offers Ojibwe language classes to the Thunder Bay community. She is also trying to help save the Ojibwe language by promoting an awareness and appreciation of a group of people alongside their cultural and traditional teachings. It is her strong cultural Ojibwe identity that drives her to share her personal knowledge.
