Poppies Poker and the Prince Arthur Hotel!

Release date March 11th, 2022

March 11th Thunder Bay Ontario Canada

Built in 1911, this iconic property is steeped in history. From the sweeping staircase and classic period ballroom to the superior lakeview suites and the gourmet Portside restaurant, the Prince Arthur Waterfront Hotel offers irresistibly classic experiences. On March 14th, 2022 we are turning 111 and we are celebrating with pride being the birthplace of the “Remembrance Day Poppy”.

The iconic red Remembrance Day poppy worn on lapels, was conceived as an idea by Madame Guerin “ The Poppy Lady of France”  at the Prince Arthur Waterfront Hotel, in 1921 during the first meeting of the Great War Veterans Association of Canada (a predecessor of the Legion. We receive veterans’ groups regularly, from Wisconsin and Minnesota who pose for pictures in front of our historic plaque. We are proud of our special permission to use the Connaught crest, a British Lion above a ducal coronet. Prince Arthur, the Duke of Connaught visited the hotel in 1912 shortly after being appointed Canada’s Governor General.

The idea for the Prince Arthur Hotel was conceived over a poker game in a private railway car by the then mayor of Port Arthur J.J. Carrick, and Sir William Mackenzie, president of the Canadian Northern Railway. Carrick offered Mackenzie a prime building location with views of the Waterfront if the railway would build a grand hotel on that land. Hence the birth of this grand dame which now plays host to travellers from all over the globe. We are delighted to celebrate all that she stands for and has accomplished in her 111 years! “What a pleasure indeed to honor history every day by welcoming guests to the Prince Arthur Waterfront Hotel” said Tony Scarcello, Hotel General Manager.
