The City of Thunder Bay is reminding motorists that the bike lanes, located on Balsam Avenue, Court Street, Fassina Street, John Street, McIntyre Street, Shuniah Street, Syndicate Avenue, Victoria Avenue, and Walsh Street, will be officially open on May 1.
“Now that it’s cycling season, motorists can expect to see a lot more cyclists on the road,” said Adam Krupper, Active Transportation Coordinator. “Every year, we see an increase in the number of cyclists, so we are asking that everyone respect the rules of the road, each other and help to keep our roads safe.”
From May 1 to Nov. 15, motorists are reminded that there is a $125 fine for driving in a bike lane, and there is $25 fine for parking, stopping, or idling in a bike lane.
“Road safety is the prime concern for all users of City streets, whether it’s motorists, cyclists or pedestrians,” said Traffic Sergeant Glenn Porter, Thunder Bay Police. “This public infrastructure is there for all to use and enjoy in safety. Each user has equal rights, and equal responsibilities.
Porter also explained that all of the usual rules of the road will apply at all times, and all users are urged to educate themselves about this new feature of traffic configuration, and all citizens using public roadways will be expected to be aware of the laws and responsibilities.
