The reason is simple: chemistry. The four members—vocalist/gui- tarist Robin Moss, drummer Scott MacKay, bassist Ian Kaufman, and guitarist Jordan Elcheson—get along really, really well, for one thing. This is evident during our recent interview at a north side bar. Musically, there’s something else, as well: a strong foun- dation in the form of a series of demos recorded by Moss that gives the band something to start from, and build on. Each member heard those demos, and loved them, prior to signing on. It’s helped things run smoothly as Cold Lake Sun began jamming and per- forming during the summer. “It helped to have those demos there when it came to playing together, because it wasn’t like we were sitting around twiddling our thumbs going “What are we going to do?’ Moss says. “Here are the songs we’re going to do.” But there’s leeway there, as well—Moss isn’t tied to his original recordings. 52 The Walleye They’re a structure and chords that his bandmates can build on, writing their own parts. “We’re still tinkering with the songs,” Kaufman says. “We have a really cool sound at this point. I think it’s the precondition for a great band—the en- ergy between the people, and working towards a common purpose. I feel like we’ve got that.” MacKay says the band, working off those demos, jammed only a few times before playing its first gig in July. “If we said ‘We’re friends, let’s start a band. We don’t know what we’re gonna do yet, let’s just play,’ there’s this time where everything’s up in the air,” MacKay says. But with Cold Lake Sun, he adds, “there’s something there that we all un- derstand the same way.” Now, Cold Lake Sun is looking to the future. “We’re looking at recording in the fall or in the winter,” Kaufman says. “That’s going to be a new experi- ence, because we’ve really focused on just jamming and getting some gigs.” For more information, find Cold Lake Sun on Facebook.
